What if Landlords’ Overcharge?
California Attorney General Rob Bonta told the BBC he had seen landlords raising prices illegally.
You cannot do it. It is a crime punishable by up to a year in jail and fines, he said. This is California law, and it’s in place to protect those suffering from a tragedy.
Los Angeles is currently in an emergency, and businesses, including landlords, are not allowed to raise rent by more than 10% within 30 days (LA County Consumer & Business Affairs).
Penal Code Section 396 restricts rent increases to no more than 10% above pre-emergency levels for both existing tenants and new leases after an emergency is declared.
